Manningham Council staff will be leaving their suits at home and pounding the pavement over 24 hours in support of cancer research at this year’s Manningham Relay For Life event at Rieschiecks Reserve, Doncaster East.

Manningham Chief Executive Officer Warwick Winn said Council would feature at least two teams in the 9-10 September event and urged local residents to join the fight against cancer by also registering a team.

“This is the seventh year the Cancer Council Victoria event has been held in the City of Manningham,” Warwick said.

“It’s also the first time Council has officially registered a team.

“Cancer affects people from all walks of life and with more than 700 Manningham locals being diagnosed with the disease every year, this is an important community event to get behind.”

Warwick said Relay For Life was an inspirational community fundraiser for Cancer Council’s research programs and was open to people of all ages and fitness levels.

“It’s for a good cause, an excellent way to keep active and something fun everyone can do to their abilities,” he said.

“It’s also a great opportunity to bring the wider community together to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost while raising funds and awareness.”

More than 330 local residents took part in last year’s event, raising a record, $55,500 for cancer research and prevention programs.

Manningham Councillor Geoff Gough and Relay For Life Patron said Council was hoping more people to register this year and exceed last year’s record.

“Our aim is to have more than 350 participants, 30 teams and raise $60,000,” he said.

“No one is ever too old or too young to take part and contribute to the community with Relay-inspired fundraising events held at schools and aged care facilities.”

Council encourages everyone to sign up for this community event and help make a difference in the fight against cancer. There will be activities and entertainment at this family-focused community event, including a special ceremony to honour and pay tributes to loved ones affected by cancer.
