Lovers of ceramic art will find beauty and inspiration at this year’s Manningham Victorian Ceramic Art Awards exhibition.

The exhibition at the Manningham Art Gallery from Wednesday, 16 August to Saturday, 23 September features one of Australia’s most respected ceramicists, Janet DeBoos, as guest judge and 62 finalists vying for the top prize.

This year’s exhibition attracted more than 160 entries from across the state and recognised excellence in studio ceramics, functional ware, sculptural and conceptual works.

Manningham City Council Mayor Cr Michelle Kleinert says the exhibition brings to Manningham some of Victoria’s finest contemporary ceramic art.

“The biennial Award supports studio ceramic artists and celebrates both great diversity of work being produced and the special place ceramics have in Manningham’s history,” she said.

“Since it was established in 2009, the acquisitive award and exhibition has featured works by Victoria’s finest ceramic artists and has been a highlight on the Manningham Art Gallery program.”

Having judged at previous ceramic exhibitions, including the International Ceramic Art Award in the Gold Coast, the Portage Ceramic Awards in New Zealand and the South African National Ceramic Awards, Janet DeBoos brings a wealth of knowledge and judging experience to the Manningham exhibition.

With a career spanning five decades and hundreds of exhibitions, the Emeritus Fellow of the Australian National University School of Art, has made a significant impact on contemporary ceramics in Australia.

The exhibition will kick off with an opening night on Wednesday 16 August, 6.00 pm to 8.00 pm with the public given an opportunity to meet some of the finalists. The winners of the $10,000 Major Prize and up to $4,000 Merit Award Acquisitions will also be announced.
