An exhibition featuring the engaging artworks of contemporary Aboriginal artists Aunty Marlene Gilson, Cassie Leatham and Pierra Van Sparkes will headline this year’s National Reconciliation Week activities in Manningham.

This year’s National Reconciliation Week marked two significant milestones in Australia’s reconciliation journey – the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Referendum and the 25th anniversary of the Mabo High Court decision.

In 1967 a vast majority of the population (90.77 per cent) voted favourably to support a change to the Constitution, which ensured Indigenous people were counted in the census and gave the Federal Government power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Manningham City Council Mayor Cr Michelle Kleinert said the two events played a significant part in Australia’s reconciliation journey and Council was keen to help commemorate them.

“The movement gained momentum after World War II when returning Indigenous soldiers did not receive the same support as non-Indigenous soldiers,” she said.

“Nuclear testing was also taking place in Indigenous communities and poverty, malnutrition and disease were rife.”

This year also marked 25 years since the High Court of Australia overturned the legal fiction of terra nullius, thanks to a campaign led by Torres Strait Islander Eddie Koiki Mabo.

This year’s National Reconciliation Week starts with National Sorry Day on Friday, 26 May. There are a number of ways the community can be involved in commemorating these pivotal moments in Australian history, including:
