Doncaster East residents and passing motorists on Reynolds and Springvale Roads were treated to the spectacular sight of a bridge flying through the air near Currawong Bush Park.
A small crowd of fascinated onlookers witnessed an enormous mobile crane set up for the massive job of lifting the seven tonne pedestrian foot bridge off the back of a transporter, over tree tops and into place across the Mullum Mullum creek.
The installation of the new pedestrian bridge (on 11 November) is part of a $400,000 Manningham Council project to complete the missing links to create a 4.5 kilometre long off-road walking circuit.
Half of the new circuit will be along the Mullum Mullum Trail and the other half on the tracks within Currawong Bush Park (giving direct pedestrian access to the Currawong Conference and Education Centres and the Currawong picnic area).
The project is expected to be completed in early 2015.
The bridge was designed by local structural engineers (BSC Consulting Engineers) and constructed by CopeAg (who won the public tender).
