Disability is part of the normal, human condition. International Day of People with Disability is held on 3 December each year and aims to celebrate and acknowledge simply that.

The United Nations recognised International Day of People with Disability is about increasing awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability and to celebrate achievements, contributions and strengths.

This year on Thursday 3 December, the 2020 theme will be ‘Not all Disabilities are Visible’. This will help communicate an understanding of disabilities that are not immediately obvious, such as mental illness, chronic pain or fatigue, diabetes, people who are blind or have low vision, the hard of hearing or deaf, people with brain injuries, neurological disorders or learning differences.

Over 90% of disabilities are invisible and people who have experience of invisible disability report attracting negative attention from the community for using designated disability seating, parking and toilets. This is why the theme is very important to share in our community.
