With the seasonal influenza rate at near-record levels, Manningham Council is urging all community members to protect themselves and help prevent the spread by getting immunised.

Community members can get immunised by attending any one of 10 venues in Warrandyte, Wonga Park, Park Orchards, Templestowe, Doncaster and Doncaster East in October.

Manningham Council Mayor Cr Michelle Kleinert said influenza was a respiratory infection that could cause serious complications, particularly to young children, seniors and people with certain medical conditions.

“Council recognises the importance of protecting our community from the virus,” she said.

“It is vital we focus on preventing the virus from spreading within the community.

“We are encouraging everyone to get immunised, with free vaccines offered to our community’s most vulnerable groups.”

This year, more than 160,000 cases of the flu have been confirmed, ranging from mild to severe, and some even causing death.

The virus is transmitted via small droplets and particles released into the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Flu vaccination is the single most effective way to prevent the spread of the virus.

Manningham Council offers the adult flu vaccination for $25 to adults and free to vulnerable groups, such as pregnant women and those over 65 years old, while stock lasts.
