Manningham Council is offering pensioners an opportunity to install solar with no upfront costs as part of a trial program to assist them to save money on their electricity bills.

The Solar Savers program, managed by the Eastern Alliance for Greenhouse Action, will allow participating households to gradually pay for their solar system through their Council rates payments over a 10 year period.

Under the Solar Savers model, it is anticipated that households will be about $100 ahead at the end of each year and that electricity bill savings should more than cover the cost of solar system repayments.

Manningham homeowners with a pension card are encouraged to register their interest by contacting Solar Savers on 9385 8512.

All interested households will be assessed to see if their property is eligible for the program, this will include checking that solar is suitable for your home and your existing electricity use.

Council will be hosting an information session on Wednesday 14 June which will provide an overview of the program and an opportunity to ask questions.

Manningham Mayor, Cr Michelle Kleinert, said the program aims to help local pensioners to save money and lower their emissions.

“Council is excited to be leading the way and helping local households in need with this pioneering program.

“We know that pensioners often have the most to gain from solar power – many own their homes and use most of their power during the day when the sun is shining. But the upfront cost can deter people from going solar,” Cr Kleinert said.

Eastern Alliance for Greenhouse Action Executive Officer Scott McKenry said Solar Savers is taking the complexity and confusion out of going solar.

“Before they sign up, we do checks to make sure that solar is the right choice and will save participants money. We also take care of finding a trusted installer and a high quality, affordable solar system,” Mr McKenry said.

Solar Savers has been funded with a $760,000 grant through the Victorian Government New Energy Jobs Fund.

The trial program is being rolled out across 20 Victorian councils to 2019. After that, there are plans to extend the program to benefit pensioners across Victoria.

There are a limited number of places available in Manningham’s Solar Savers program.
