Manningham Council is working with the Tunstall Square Traders Association and has rescheduled the works associated with the closure of Shaw Street to start after the busy 2016 Christmas/New Year trading period.

The works to create a public plaza space are part of stage three of the five stage upgrade of Tunstall Square and will now start in late January 2017, having been rescheduled from October 2016. This will minimise disruption to traders and visitors to Tunstall Square during this period.

Manningham Mayor, Cr Paul McLeish, said that Council has listened to feedback from traders and has decided to reschedule the works to avoid the hectic Christmas period.

“As well as minimising disruption, rescheduling the closure of Shaw Street will allow more time for consultation with traders, and other key stakeholders, on the design, look and feel of the public plaza.

“We are pleased to be working with the traders to ensure the best outcome and timing for these works and to support this vibrant centre in Doncaster East,” he said.

Tunstall Square Traders Association President Gus Moustafa said he supported Council’s decision to reschedule the works.

“The traders of Tunstall Square appreciate the patience of our loyal clientele and the general public as we undergo beautification works in our centre.

“Although the works may pose some short term pain, they will undoubtedly provide long term gain for both traders and customers of Tunstall Square,” he said.

Council’s decision to officially close Shaw Street to create a public plaza for the shopping centre was made in May this year, following community consultation.

Council is currently completing stage two of the five stage upgrade of Tunstall Square following the completion of stage one in August 2015.

Stage two includes improvements to the footpaths, landscaping and drainage along the southern end of Tunstall Square and is anticipated for completion by the end of July.

Stages four and five will include streetscape works along the western side of Tunstall Square. Stage four is expected to start in late April 2017 and stage five will commence early 2018.
