On Monday 15 June we are joining the efforts to acknowledge World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, to reinforce the important message that “There’s no excuse for elder abuse”.

Everyone in our community has the right to feel safe, respected and valued, and even more so during these uncertain times. Elder abuse is any act which causes harm to an older person and is carried out by someone they know and trust such as a family member or friend. For example, taking someone’s money or possessions, not providing necessary care, making threats or stopping an older person’s social contacts, or physical or sexual abuse.

Our commitment

In 2017, Manningham Council signed the Victorian Age-Friendly Declaration. In 2019, we established the Manningham Positive Ageing Alliance Group, along with a two-year action plan.

Our vision of an age-friendly Manningham is one where older people are respected and valued, and able to connect and participate.

We believe older people should be treated with respect and that ageism should be called out. This includes challenging stereotypes of older people and encouraging people to speak up and take action. We can all do the right thing by listening to older people and their carers, and checking in with older members of the community.

A person affected by elder abuse may:

  • Act fearfully or withdraw
  • Show signs of stress, anxiety or depression
  • May show signs of bruising or other physical injuries
  • May not have the ability to pay normal bills or have unpaid bills
