The Minister for Local Government has announced the new electoral structure for Manningham. The new structure was gazetted today and will apply to the 24 October Council election. Manningham will now have nine single Councillor wards, a change from three wards with three Councillors each.
The new ward names are:
The Minister for Local Government selected the ward names, taking into consideration feedback received via community consultation undertaken by Manningham Council in May this year.
In total Council received over 160 contributions on ward names in Manningham during community consultation, with a strong preference toward names that reflected Manningham’s connections to the area’s history and future.
Manningham Mayor, Cr Paul McLeish said “We’re disappointed that the timeframe given to us by the former Minister for Local Government didn’t allow us enough time to engage the Wurundjeri Land Council on names for Manningham’s new wards.”
“In the future Council would like to engage further with the Wurundjeri Land Council to consider appropriate, permanent Indigenous names to be put forward to the current Minister for consideration.”
MAP: Ward boundaries are indicative only.
Manningham Council is calling for ward name suggestions before Thursday 21 May as it gets set to move to a new nine ward structure before this year’s Council elections.
The Victorian Government announced late last month that Manningham will move from three to nine wards, with a single councillor set to represent each ward.
Council is calling for name suggestions after being advised by the Minister for Local Government this week that it has just two and a half weeks to provide names for the newly created wards.
Residents, businesses, community groups and more are invited to make suggestions and share their name ideas for the wards, which are currently being referred to as Wards A through to I by the Victorian Government.
Manningham Mayor, Cr Paul McLeish, said that while the changes to the wards have been mandated by Adem Somyurek, Minister of Local Government, Council is using the short window available to reach out to the community so that at least the names of the nine new wards reflect the local community and area they represent.
“Our existing ward boundaries have been changed by the Victorian Government despite the Electoral Representation Review, conducted last year by the Victorian Electoral Commission, recommendation to stay with the current three multi councillor wards.
“The Minister has now given us just a couple of weeks to provide a list of ward names for Manningham. We want everyone in our community to share their suggestions into what our wards should be named.
“I encourage everyone to think about what represents your local area in Manningham and make a name suggestion before 21 May.
“We will then put a recommendation to the Minister for names of the nine new Manningham wards, which will come into effect at the next Council elections in October this year,” Cr McLeish said.
To share your ideas and view a map of the new ward boundaries, visit yoursay.manningham.vic.gov.au/wards
Submissions will close at 12noon on Thursday 21 May 2020.

The Warrandyte Historical Society invite you to come and learn about the discovery of gold in Warrandyte and how it shaped the township and community.
Warrandyte is justifiably proud of its place in the gold history of Victoria. Gold was first discovered at Anderson's Creek in June 1851. It was the first officially published goldfield, named the 'Victoria Field', in honour of the new Colony. It was also the first place in the Colony to issue gold mining licences.
This exhibit celebrates the 170th anniversary of the first discovery by Louis John Michel and his team. You'll find interesting and colourful banners on display inside and outside the Museum, showcasing
the discovery of gold and how this has shaped the township and community. They share the lure of gold and excitement around the discovery that continues today.
You can visit to see the outside banners placed on the fence-line of the Museum at any time during the Heritage Festival. To access the banners inside the Museum, please see the exhibition times.
This exhibition is open from 18 April to 22 May 2022.
The indoor exhibition inside the Museum, is open on Sundays, from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm.
There is both on-street parking, and off-road car parks available on Yarra Street.

We’re proud to introduce your new Mayor, Tullamore Ward Councillor Deirdre Diamante ...
We’re proud to introduce your new Mayor, Tullamore Ward Councillor Deirdre Diamante.
Councillors unanimously elected Cr Diamante Mayor for 2022-23, at the Annual Council Meeting on Thursday 3 November.
It seems Cr Diamante was always destined for the gown and gavel, having grown up on Council Street in Doncaster.
In her acceptance speech, the mother of three said she would prioritise Council visibility and responsiveness for the community.
“The opportunity to lead this city in public service is amazing, it is a real honour,” Cr Diamante said.
“I want Manningham to continue to be a great place to live, to learn and to grow. I want my children to want to live here, I want my children to want to raise their families here.”
Cr Diamante said councillors had many responsibilities and one of those was to “protect and foster those aspects of this beautiful city, that make it such a great place to live.”
“I strongly believe one of our core roles, is to represent those people who elected us, advocate for them and to be their voice.
“I want to create more opportunities for councillors to visit your wards and speak on matters that are important to you and your community.”
Councillors congratulated the new Mayor and commented on her strong values and determination to listen to the community, keeping an open mind when it came to decisions affecting you.
These sentiments were echoed by Council CEO, Andrew Day, who congratulated the Mayor on behalf of the organisation.
Councillor Tomas Lightbody was elected deputy Mayor in his second major achievement of the day, incredibly, having also completed his master’s degree.
Cr Lightbody was congratulated by his fellow councillors for both achievements and the Mayor and Deputy Mayor will serve in their new positions for one year.
Councillors also thanked outgoing Mayor, Cr Michelle Kleinert for her tireless leadership, energy, passion and for reconnecting Council with the community following the COVID-19 lockdowns.
During her Mayoral term, Cr Kleinert met many of you while attending more than 600 key openings and events, welcoming over 1000 new citizens to Manningham and advocating for strong mental health services.
Cr Kleinert said she had endeavoured to reconnect, listen and be present and accessible each day of her second Mayoral term, having also served as Mayor in 2016-17.
Mullum Mullum Ward Councillor Paul McLeish has been elected Mayor and Heide Ward Councillor, Michelle Kleinert as Deputy Mayor for 2014-15 at the annual meeting of Manningham Council on 2 December, 2014.
Cr McLeish said holding the office of Mayor is a great privilege and he offered his thanks to his colleagues for the opportunity to lead Council.
“I am honoured and humbled to have been chosen by my fellow Councillors to be the Mayor of Manningham, and I would like to thank them for the opportunity to both represent and serve our City and community.
“I would like to thank our outgoing Mayor Cr Grivokostopoulos for his hard work and dedication as Mayor. Jim was Mayor for every resident always welcoming and always engaging. He did an outstanding job in both bringing a high profile to the position, and in representing the people of Manningham.”
“We are half way through our term of office, and I am pleased that we as a Council, have achieved a great deal together and made considered decisions for the benefit of our community.”
“During this mayoral term I will continue to emphasise the importance of listening to our community and of working together towards our common goals.”
“Now, more than ever, this Council is about placing the residents first, and it has been heartening to watch the necessary reshaping of many key operations.”
“We asked the organisation to find new and innovative ways to foster improvements and I am very pleased that this has been embraced at all levels, and significant progress has been made," he said
This is Cr McLeish’s first term as Manningham Mayor, and he is the first mayor from the Mullum Mullum ward since 2006.
