In recognition of International Day of People with Disability (IDPWD) on 3 December, this seminar provides positive strategies to support children and teens living with autism.

Children and adolescents on the autism spectrum may struggle to understand and express emotions, resulting in high levels of stress, anxiety, anger and/or depression, with subsequent effects on families, teachers, friends and peers.

Research identifies that conventional strategies that encourage emotion and behaviour management for neurotypical children do not seem to be as effective with those who are on the autism spectrum, therefore significantly affecting their learning and social and emotional confidence.

In this full day, live-streamed seminar, Professor Tony Attwood and Dr Michelle Garnett combine their decades of experience working with children and adolescents on the autism spectrum. The strategies used are based on Cognitive Behaviour Therapy that have been proven effective in assisting children on the autism spectrum.

Learning objectives

  • Understand why children and adolescents on the autism spectrum have emotion regulation difficulties
  • Recognise how anxiety presents behaviourally for a child or adolescent on the autism spectrum
  • Gain strategies to manage intense anger in a child on the autism spectrum
  • Know how to deal with challenging behaviour
  • Understand and support strategies to assist a child or adolescent on the autism spectrum to overcome depression
  • Utilise anxiety management strategies to assist a child on the autism spectrum to feel calmer
