The development of happy, healthy and active children is a high priority of Manningham Council and this October, Council is encouraging all local primary schools to register and take part in VicHealth’s Walk to School initiative.

The VicHealth initiative complements Council’s Active Travel Program, sharing the common goal of promoting active travel as a way for students to stay fit and healthy, while reducing traffic congestion around schools.

During October, Council is offering local primary schools incentives to participate in Walk to School Month. Schools are encouraged to host walk to school days and a healthy breakfast in the bid to get more people walking and riding to school. A range of great competitions and prizes are also on offer during Walk to School month.

Manningham Mayor Cr Paul McLeish said VicHealth’s Walk to School month is a free, easy and fun way for kids to get active this October.

“Walking to school is a great way for children to get their 30 minutes of exercise each day. To get involved students can choose to walk from home or simply walk part of the way to school.

“Walk to School month is a great way to raise awareness of the health and wellbeing benefits of walking for children; I encourage local schools and primary school students and their families to get involved.”

Schools can sign up to Vic Health's Walk to School campaign by visiting www.walktoschool.vic.gov.au and register with Council to be eligible for some great prizes at www.manningham.vic.gov.au/active-travel-program
