This talk will introduce you to the wondrous world of Growling Grass Frogs – a spectacular species for which the outer suburbs of Melbourne represent a national stronghold.
Dr Geoff Heard will describe the places across Melbourne where you can see this species, the types of habitats they require to survive in urban areas, and the threats they face in a rapidly changing world.
Heard will also discuss what you can do for this endangered species in your local area, from recording its growl-like call to help scientists with monitoring, to how you can create the right mix of environments in which Growling Grass Frogs thrive at home or in your school.
This event is brought to you by the State Government's Victoria Nature Festival and Dr Geoff Heard, a Melbourne-based ecologist.

A terrible water shortage has crippled the Gotham-like town that serves as the setting for Urinetown.
In a mad attempt to regulate water consumption, the government has outlawed the use of private toilets. The citizenry must use public, pay-for-use amenities owned and operated by the corrupt and iron-fisted Caldwell B. Cladwell. The privilege to pee is expensive, draining and dangerous. Anyone who refuses to pay to pee is immediately and without question hauled off to Urinetown.
What is Urinetown? Nobody knows, for those who are sent there are never heard from again. But it's really a love story and there's a revolution all before the end of Act I. Will the revolution succeed? Can true love be found in Urinetown? All these questions and more are answered in Urinetown.
Auslan interpreted performance: Friday 8 September, 8.00pm to 10.00pm.
Presented by Phoenix Theatre Company.

In early 2020, local artist Noha Aly facilitated a series of four painting on canvas sessions for families.
The sessions were focused on promoting the many health benefits of creating artwork and sharing the joy of painting as a family. Whilst being guided by Aly, participants explored non-verbal language and personal wellness through the release of stress and anxiety.
This small exhibition, on display in the foyer of Manningham City Square, is a colourful and joyful celebration of the work of the workshop participants.
Painting on Canvas Workshops were supported by Manningham Community Strengthening Grants, which provides funding for one-off activities that support community strengthening initiatives and improve the quality of life for Manningham residents.
Located at the entrance to MC Square, Manningham Art Gallery presents a diverse range of contemporary art exhibitions and related public programs throughout the year. See all upcoming exhibitions.

This year's National Reconciliation Week Exhibition features a collection of exquisite, small-scale ink drawings by Wurundjeri artist Ash Firebrace.
Produced throughout the last year, the collection depicts Wurundjeri culture ancestral beings and deities in a powerful graphic style with a muted black, white and gold colour palette. Whilst reminiscent of Firebrace's mural work, the drawings are also an intimate and beguiling glimpse into the artist's working method and his expression of cultural heritage and identity.
Accompanying the drawings will be a series of cultural artifacts produced by Firebrace, and a Possum Skin Cloak he produced in collaboration with his sister Michelle Mills.
Firebrace has also been commissioned to produce a new artwork for display in the Manningham Civic Centre, elements of which will be created in the Gallery during the exhibition.
Located at the entrance to MC Square, Manningham Art Gallery presents a diverse range of contemporary art exhibitions and related public programs throughout the year. See all upcoming exhibitions.

The City Nature Challenge runs from Friday 26 April to Monday 29 April 2024.
In this worldwide BioBlitz, cities compete to make the most observations of the most species by the most people.
Manningham is collaborating with over 25 local governments to form the Greater Melbourne project.
It is free, easy, and fun to get involved.
During the 4-day window of this challenge, take photos of plants or animals and upload it to iNaturalist.
Your observations will be added to the Manningham iNaturalist projects (Manningham East or Manningham West) so that we can compete with participants from across Melbourne and all over the world.
All data gets added to Australia’s database of plants and animals, helping scientists with their research to improve outcomes for our environment.

Solar Savers is a local government initiative helping households and businesses to install quality and affordable rooftop solar and batteries. This initiative is supported by Manningham Council in partnership with Solar Savers.
Council provides subsidies to pensioners for roof top solar and to all residents who install batteries purchased through Solar Savers. This is an opportunity for pensioners to learn how to reduce their energy cost by installing roof top solar. And for those who want to ensure their power stays on, even during blackouts, energy security for the home is now made more affordable.
